The Living Room Riff — Tuesdays: gear, Fridays: craft. For guitarists whose audience is their own living room.

No. 1 — Gear, Tuesday. Landing soon.

A verdict, twice a week

We watched the 34-minute demo. Here is the verdict.

The Living Room Riff is a dispatch for guitarists whose audience is their own living room. Tuesday on gear, Friday on craft.

Every issue reads the demos and the lessons, credits the source, links it, then tells you the whole of it in five minutes. At the top: worth it, wait, or skip it.

A dollar an issue, paid by you. That is why we can say skip it.

Nothing to sign up for here. No. 1 is not written yet.

Worth it
Every issue opens with one of three stamps and the price in plain dollars. The stamp is always free to see.

The problem

Eleven minutes of preamble before the pedal is plugged in.

There is more guitar coverage than ever and less judgement in it. Demos run long because length is rewarded. Written coverage sits on an ad-choked page and will not tell you whether the thing is worth the money.

All of it is free, so all of it is beholden — to advertisers, to affiliate links, to the brands who supply the review units. Nobody is paid to be short and honest.

  • One pedal demo on YouTube34:12
  • Of which is preamble11:40
  • A written review that will not say skip it6 min
  • The Living Room Riff, and a verdict5 min

The five minutes is the product. The rest we do for you.

The whole vocabulary

Three verdicts. No stars, no scores out of ten, no best-of grids.

Worth it

Buy it. It does the thing, and the price is honest.

Wait

Good, but not at this price, or not in this version.

Skip it

No. Here is the cheaper thing that already does it.

Tuesday — the Gear Issue

What dropped, what it costs, worth it or not.

One pedal, amp or guitar taken apart: what it actually does, what the demo sounded like, what the reviewer would not say out loud, and the price in the first paragraph. Then the stamp.

The Source

Credited by name and linked at the top of every issue, so you can hear it yourself. We are not hiding where this came from.

Friday — the Craft Issue

One technique, tone or song, written down.

Taken apart the same way, with the practice path spelled out. Nobody here assumes you are working toward a stage. You play at home, most weeks, and you would like to get a little better.

Anatomy

What one issue looks like.

Below is the shape of every issue, empty. The words arrive with No. 1. The verdict, the price and the first paragraph stay free forever; the dollar buys The Short Version.

The reason this works

You pay us, so nobody else can.

Free gear media is paid by the industry it covers, which is why it almost never tells you not to buy something. We take a dollar from you instead, and owe the manufacturers nothing.

That is the durable part. A page funded by ads cannot copy it without giving up the ads.

  • No ads
  • No sponsors
  • No affiliate links
  • No press releases retyped
  • No 34-minute video to sit through
  • Ever. It is a product decision, not a revenue one.

What it will cost

A dollar an issue, bought a handful at a time.

8 issues — $8A month of Tuesdays and Fridays
4 issues — $4A fortnight

No subscription. Nothing renews. We will never charge you without you tapping a button. The latest issue is free in full, with no wall and no address asked for.

Not on sale yet. When No. 1 ships you can read it and decide. Nothing on this page takes your money or your address.
